Grass is cut by being trapped between the two blades, just like scissors cutting paper. Cylinder mowers normally have a grass box in which clippings are collected. They leave a striped effect and cut the grass very cleanly without ripping it.

Rotary mowers for domestic use have a single blade that rotates horizontally. The blade tip hits the grass at high speed and relies on a sharp cutting edge for a clean cut.

Rotary mowers will handle uneven lawns and those with longer, rougher grass types. They can have a collection box or bag, or clippings can be left to ‘fly’ if they are dry. If a striping effect is desired you will need to purchase a mower with a rear roller.
