Mowing
Do we not all aspire to a lovely green, striped lawn fronting our homes? Surprisingly, it is not that difficult to achieve.
Your lawn should be mowed at the correct height and frequency needed for the intended use. You will need also to select the right type of mower most suited to your lawn type, as explained below.
Types of Mower
There are two types of mowers, described by their cutting action: cylinder or rotary.
Cylinder mowers cut the grass in a scissor action with two blades. One blade is fixed while a cylinder of 5-10 blades rotates at high speed. Grass is cut by being trapped between the two blades, just like scissors cutting through paper.
Cylinder mowers normally have a grass box in which clippings are collected. They leave a striped effect and cut the grass very cleanly without ripping it.
Rotary mowers for domestic use have a single blade that rotates horizontally. The blade tip hits the grass at high speed and relies on a sharp cutting edge for a clean cut.
Rotary mowers will handle uneven lawns and those with longer, rougher grass types. They can have a collection box or bag, or clippings can be left to ‘fly’ if they are dry. If a striping effect is desired you will need to purchase a mower with a rear roller.
Types of Lawn
When selecting a mower and determining the height your grass should be cut, it is important to consider intended use, grass species and time available.
A bowling green type lawn will require mowing three to four times a week at 8mm-10mm with a cylinder mower. Achieving this immaculate finish requires your lawn to be very smooth otherwise high spots will turn brown and die due to too close mowing.
A lawn for purely ornamental looks can be cut at 20-25mm using a cylinder mower, or sharp bladed rotary mower, up to twice per week.
A lawn used for family recreation is best cut at 35-50mm so that the grass is not worn away very quickly. A good rotary mower is adequate for this task, used once per week.
A Great rule of thumb is to cut no more than 1/3 of the existing height of the grass.
Mowing after Treatment
If you choose to have your lawn naturally treated by The Great Lawn Company, please note below the best practice to follow regarding mowing to get the most from your Great Lawn.
After your lawn has been treated using The Great Lawn Company’s 100% safe and natural treatments, it is essential to allow time for the fertilisers to work before cutting the grass. This normally takes 1-2 days, but as a general rule of thumb you should wait until you can no longer see the granules on the grass and mow with one of our recommended mowers.
In addition, when doing the first cut, it is vital that you do not collect the clippings. If you pick up the grass clippings you could also be picking up the granules that The Great Lawn Company have put down for you, containing essential nutrients for Great Lawn growth. Excessive clippings can smother the grass so some careful raking up may to necessary to ensure the fertiliser stays where it should be – on your lawn.
